Case study: Tākaro, the Te Reo Māori card game

Background

Tākaro is a fast-paced Māori language learning game created by the team at Game Kings in Hamilton, NZ. The idea came after they realised how few Māori games there were on the market, especially those aimed at beginners.

Eliot from Game Kings had a chat to me about building an online reference site for the game to help players ensure they were correctly pronouncing the Maori words they are learning.

Design phase

We first settled on some basic specs and requirements for the site

I then went away and designed a simple mockup that covered all the needs we outlined (with some descriptive tags)

Build phase

I built the site over a couple of days and then worked with Poppy, (from the Game Kings team), on some final refinements over the next few days.
